Clean Penny Service (CPS) is a performance duo of Lizzie Wright and Mike Smith. Established in 2009 in response to the overwhelming amount of dirty pennies in the world, their mission is to clean a dirty penny for each passerby, using “natural” methods whenever possible, free of charge.

La Llorona / Fair Margaret and Sweet William
A ritualistic song / story duet by Johannah Herr and Margaret Mary Downey that weaves together the folklore of the Mexican tale of La Llorona (the weeping woman) with the ominous Appalachian ballad “Fair Margaret and Sweet William" through a typewriter duet, a circle of salt, intricate cut-paper masks and folk songs not easily forgotten.

Alison Owen

Alison Owen received her MFA from Claremont Graduate University in 2005. She participated in the AIM program at the Bronx Museum of Art in 2007, and recently completed a residency at foundation id11 in Delft, the Netherlands. The Rhode Island State Council for the Arts awarded Owen the New Genres fellowship in 2010. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries, including the Soap Factory in Minneapolis, Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, Bank Gallery and Kinkead Contemporary in Los Angeles, and Artspace in New Haven.

Chad Stayrook is a living and breathing artist who has been working in New York City since 2004. Chad was born February 1st 1980 in Columbus OH. He received his B.F.A. in Sculpture from Ohio University and his M.F.A. in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute. Chad has exhibited extensively throughout the US in New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C. and internationally in the UK, Netherlands, and South Korea. Chad has participated as an artist in residence at the Tin Shop Studio in Breckenridge CO, Jamiaca Center for Arts and Learning’s Studio LLC program in Queens, NY, and will soon embark on an expedition to the arctic circle with 17 other artists and scientists.

Lizzie Wright is an artist from south Louisiana who currently lives and works in Brooklyn. She received her MFA in Sculpture from Yale University in 2008. Mike Peter Smith is a visual artist who grew up in Utah. In 2000 He received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. After Moving to New York in 2001, he has participated in several group exhibits locally and nationally, including solo shows at Jeff Bailey Gallery in Chelsea. Mr. Smith is the other cofounder of the Clean Penny Service. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn.

Deric Carner is a ceaseless nomad and an obsessive pirate of all signs and symbols. Carner has exhibited at Artists Space (2009), Ping Pong Gallery (2010, 2008), Geisai Miami (2008), Witte de With Rotterdam (2006), CAC Vilnius (2005), and Kunstverein Malkasten Duesseldorf (2005). His work has been featured in publications by Revolver Books (Frankfurt, 2005-2006); ZYZZYVA (SF, Fall 2008); SUM Magazine (Copenhagen, Spring 2008); and is included in the KIOSK archive at the Kunstbibliothek Berlin (2009). Carner recieved a MacDowell Fellowship in 2009.

Roddy Schrock is a New York City based composer. His live performances, music and installations have been presented in Japan, Europe and North America. His music juxtaposes playful sonic surfaces and formalism, rooted in frivolity.

Elias Ravin

Elias Ravin moved to New York in 2001 to study music and writing at NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study. A jack of all under-earning trades, Elias has been a nationally ranked whitewater kayaker, a construction worker, a rock climbing instructor, and a RollingStone intern. His scatterbrained enthusiasm is equally manifest in his musical endeavors. Elias has in recent times scored short documentary "Feet", musical director-ed "2Pac: The Musical!", and whipped up a batch yet-to-be-released electronic tracks that aim to reduce the yawning chasm between Daft Punk and Iron Maiden to a mere gully.

Elizabeth Cooper was born in New York and attended the Cooper Union and Columbia University. Her works have been seen internationally and her solo shows have been reviewed in The New York Times, Art In America, The Brooklyn Rail, The New Yorker and The New York Sun. She is represented by Thrust Projects on the Lower East Side in New York and Galerie Schmidt Maczollek of Cologne , Germany. She recently had a solo show at Galerie Gisele Linder of Basel, Switzerland. She is to be featured in an upcoming group show at Sloan Fine Art on the Lower East Side .  

Caleb Nussear is a New York based painter and installation artist. He has completed residencies at the Vermont Studio Center and at I-Park , CT. His work interweaves gesture and crystalline structures to present spare contemplative environs in which newborn information systems are engaged in a highly problematized search for self-knowledge. These systems continuously fold and unfold, evolving as vivid physical objects in the world, as objects that possess reflexive intelligence and function as animal life forms. Mr. Nussear pushes the limits of the 2-dimensional painted surface by either accentuating the work’s attachment to the wall or pulling the work from the wall, and out into space, utilizing the horizontal space of the floor in conjunction with the vertical.

Brian Zegeer is an artist and writer. He has exhibited in New York at venues including Stephan Stoyanov Gallery, Jack the Pelican Presents, Elga Wimmer Gallery, and Vaudeville Park. Other locations include the Delaware Museum of Art (Wilmington), Maryland Art Place (Baltimore), Vox Populi (Philadelphia), and Icebox Project Space (Philadelphia). Brian has built a maquette of a luxury condo building on a rubble pile in the East River , and toured the East Coast with a heavy-metal-inspired shadow theatre performance. He writes for Timeout NY and lives in Brooklyn.

Kendra Urdang is a doula, farmer, and poet interested in the deconstruction of self-understanding of the body, time, language, and their limits. Sometimes she writes to angels to help discern and confront where these themes fail and where they succeed. She lives in Brooklyn. She says hi.

THE ORACULUM is a mixed media installation created at the navel of the world featuring Kendra Urdang's ecstatic speech and Eliza Swann's video projections. The room has been refashioned to invite divine utterances in the style of the Oracle at Delphi. This modern Oracle hopes to re-establish a sense of intimacy between people and the Gods that has been forgotten in our digital age. As a person who has also lost her way, her prophecy is as much a personal confession as it is a message from above. The Oraculum penetrates the mysteries of miscommunication and proposes that noise and nonsense can be the catalyst for flashes of great insight. The Oracle speaks at 9pm.

Johannah Herr + Margaret Mary Downey

Johannah Herr is a visual artist and storyteller who lives and works in Brooklyn. She received her BFA in Fine Arts from Parsons in 2009 and has exhibited in New York, London and Berlin with recent shows at the L.E.S. gallery Envoy Enterprises and the DADApost Gallery in Berlin. She is a former member of the Berlin-based art collective GRUNTWORK and her work will be showcased in the upcoming Figment Sculpture Garden on Governer's Island and Chashama's Window space program. Her art revolves around the dissection of ritual, ornament, folklore and other forms of cultural artifact and most often manifests itself in ephemeral sculpture that lives between the act of creating it and its photo documentation.

Margaret Mary Downey is a writer and radio geek from Philadelphia. She is currently enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania's MLA program in Anthropology. She is the former host and producer of the Lancaster Avenue Autonomous Zone's (a collective space for activists, journalists and artists) "Open Your Throat" featuring local poets, dramatists and essayists on Radio Volta, a project of the Philadelphia Independent Media center. In her writing (and reading) she looks to incorporate the ritualized ranges of conjure, repetition, myth, metaphor and speech act and to explore the encountered difference between what we mean and what we say. She is currently exploring the artistic possibilities of Microsoft PowerPoint (alternately treating speech as object and as organism, using the intersections of text and sound to create unexpected, emergent experiences) for an installation in conjunction with the Baltimore Annex Theater/Puppet Uprising at the OX Gallery in Philadelphia.

The collaborative duo were born and raised in the fertile soil of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, whose abandoned barns, lurking Amishmen and shadowed country roads kindled an appreciation for all things backwood and folkloric in their impressionable hearts.

For my installation piece 'Dead Fetishes Waiting for a Ceremony' I take cues from the African shaman. A shaman, like an artist, possesses an “eye.” He recognizes the spirit in an object. I likewise “identify” objects. Like fetishes, which are assembled by a shaman from all kinds of organic an inorganic matter into mysterious objects, my process, too, involves collecting, sewing, wrapping, cutting, covering, knotting, tying, connecting, nailing, piercing, weaving; a meditative, accumulative stream of actions that inform the finished work.

Sophie Grant

Sophie Grant is an artist from California who currently lives and works in New York. Her aesthetic methodology is influenced by the unavoidably encoded nature within us, and inspired by cultural production that activates the space between the physical and metaphysical. Using composted formal fragments, her hybrid drawings reflect upon the gradual and immediate human experiences of both fading from and fighting for visibility and palpability. After receiving her BA from the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Department of Art in 2008, she completed the Painting’s Edge residency, and has exhibited in New York and California.

This drawing, ‘Repeated Embrace’, signals something in peril that is also a threat. I manipulated octopi arms, aiming to simulate an intestinal material that could imprint formless traces, yet suggest the most intimate tendencies and operations. Forms wrestle: intestinal and skeletal structures blur human and animal experiences. Surfaces assert their presence, yet beg for penetration. These octopi drawings frustrate cravings for instant information-based recognition; instead transformed entities summon insecurities rooted in cultural relationships with everyday visual matter. This work attempts to honor matter occupied in the uncertain connectedness of a disordered and diseased world. Alarming at the onset of making, evolution and invasion are neither monstrosity nor stoppage: they facilitate conversations between those dead and those dying to live. These conversations sustain work that always makes for more work.

Temitayo Ogunbiyi

Temitayo Ogunbiyi is currently creating work for spaces that serve or served a specific function to which the display of visual art is secondary, tertiary, or a chance happening. Referencing these locales, their histories and physical state, she conceives of work that tends to envelop any number of interests, which often include bodily disfigurement, pattern (as visual, process-oriented, and temporal), and collage. His current body of work focuses on the creation of myth and objects of fctionalized reverence, often born out of fascination for certain aspects of technology.
